As workers around the world celebrate May 1st, known as Labour Day, employees of the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) are in a sombre mood as their hard-earned April salaries have yet to be paid.
The delay in receiving their April salaries has left many workers unable to provide for necessities to support their families and friends.
The situation is exacerbated by the fact that the government is facing financial difficulties, with reports indicating that the National Revenue Authority (NRA) failed to meet its targets due to corruption and President Bio’s extravagant travel expenses, as well as other corrupt activities within various Ministry Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
The cost of living is rapidly spiralling out of control, making it increasingly difficult for workers to make ends meet.
Despite the worsening situation, it appears that President Bio and his government are out of touch with the reality on the ground and lack a clear plan of action to address the current economic challenges.
As the situation continues to deteriorate, workers are left feeling disillusioned and unsupported by their government.
The failure to pay salaries on time and address the root causes of financial mismanagement only serves to deepen the sense of frustration and hopelessness among the workforce.
On this Labour Day, instead of celebrating the contributions of workers to the nation’s development, many employees of the GoSL are left grappling with uncertainty and financial strain, highlighting the urgent need for accountability and transparency in governance to ensure a more equitable and prosperous future for all citizens.
